Why focus on Social Accountability?

The healthcare crisis is a worldwide issue.  Global healthcare expenditures have risen to $8 trillion and are expected to increase at a rate of 4.1% annually, up from 1.3% in 2012.  Yet in spite of this increased spending, we are faced with an ever-widening gap in healthcare access. Social Accountability is a tool to help mitigate this issue by introducing an equitable approach to innovative global healthcare delivery. As physicians, it is our duty to bring social accountability to the forefront of medical education, research and practice, in order to make good health equitable for all.

Does SOLUTIONS overlap with other programs at Stanford?

Stanford is recognized as a leader in social responsibility because of its many socially innovative programs.  However, there are many facets to social responsibility and no single program can address all of them. As physicians, we provide a unique medical perspective and understanding of how legislation, industry and other factors impact the health of our patients.

SOLUTIONS strives to empower physicians to serve as vehicles of change for equitable access to medical resources and health care delivery systems. SOLUTIONS will work synergistically with programs throughout the University and elsewhere providing the unique expertise of academic medical physicians.  We believe that we can create the greatest impact by working in synergy with other like-minded groups.

What should we expect from SOLUTIONS in 2023?

  • Several international pharmaceutical companies have voiced their interest in working with SOLUTIONS so that they can optimize their products before starting their clinical trials.  SOLUTIONS’s Catalyst Lab will develop a deep learning platform focused on optimizing how clinical studies are designed and executed.
  • SOLUTIONS promotes sustainable and equitable innovations developed by Stanford and its partners.  One example is SOLUTIONS’s low-cost high-fidelity simulator which will provide high impact health care training for the global medical education community.
